What is Routing Information Protocol (RIP)? | Definition from TechTarget

RIP uses a distance vector algorithm to decide which path to put a packet on so it arrives at its destination. Each RIP router maintains a routing table listing all the destinations the router knows how to reach and broadcasts it to its closest neighbors every 30 seconds. Once the involved computers and router interfaces have assigned IP addresses, developers can issue the router RIP command, which tells the router to enable RIP. Then, developers can use the network command, enabling users to identify the networks they want to work with.RIP uses a distance vector algorithm to decide which path to put a packet on so it arrives at its destination. Each RIP router maintains a routing table listing all the destinations the router knows how to reach and broadcasts it to its closest neighbors every 30 seconds. In this context, neighbors are the other routers that the first router connects directly to. This only includes the other routers on the same network segments as the selected router. The neighbors, in turn, pass the information on to their nearest neighbors, and so on, until all RIP hosts within the network have the same knowledge of routing paths. If a router crashes or something severs the network connection, the router stops sending and receiving updates to or from its neighbors or along the severed connection. If a given route in the routing table isn't updated across six successive update cycles -- 180 seconds -- a RIP router drops that route and notifies the rest of the network about the problem through its own periodic updates.

Routing Information Protocol (RIP) - GeeksforGeeks

Routing Information Protocol uses Distance Vector Routing to put the packets to its destination. In RIP, Each router maintains a routing table where the distance to each destination is mentioned. RIP sharesits routing tables to neighbouring routers at an interval of 30 seconds through broadcasting. The Routing Information Protocol is a distance vector routing protocol that helps routers determine the best path to transfer data packets across the network. RIP works on the Network layer of the OSI model. It uses hop count as its metric for determining the best path, but the maximum hop count allowed in the RIP is 15.Your All-in-One Learning Portal: GeeksforGeeks is a comprehensive educational platform that empowers learners across domains-spanning computer science and programming, school education, upskilling, commerce, software tools, competitive exams, and more.Hop count is the number of routers occurring between the source and destination network. The path with the lowest hop count is considered the best route to reach a network and therefore placed in the routing table. RIP prevents routing loops by limiting the hops allowed in a path from source to destination.Routing Information Protocol uses Distance Vector Routing to put the packets to its destination. What is RIP Protocol and How Does it Work?- Best Explained 2025

RIP (Routing Information Protocol) is a popular networking protocol used in large networks. Learn how RIP Protocol works, its benefits & drawbacks, etc. We will learn in detail why it is called a distance vector routing protocol in the later part of this blog. So, we will cover what is Routing Information Protocol (RIP). Then we will learn how this protocol works and after that, we will learn about the advantages and disadvantages of the RIP protocol in Networking. The Routing Information Protocol or RIP in CCNA is an interior-gateway distance vector routing protocol. To summarize, we have learned about the working of the RIP in Networking and we have also looked into the advantages and disadvantages of the RIP protocol in Networking. To understand how RIP works, we will consider two types of networks.RIP only works on the basis of the hop count matrix.

Routing Information Protocol - Wikipedia

The Routing Information Protocol (RIP) is one of the oldest distance-vector routing protocols which employs the hop count as a routing metric. RIP prevents routing loops by implementing a limit on the number of hops allowed in a path from source to destination. Based on the Bellman–Ford algorithm and the Ford–Fulkerson algorithm, distance-vector routing protocols started to be implemented from 1969 onwards in data networks such as the ARPANET and CYCLADES. The predecessor of RIP was the Gateway Information Protocol (GWINFO) which was developed by Xerox in the mid-1970s to route its experimental network. As part of the Xerox Network Systems (XNS) protocol suite GWINFO transformed into the XNS Routing Information Protocol. This XNS RIP in turn became the basis for early routing protocols, such as Novell's IPX RIP, AppleTalk's Routing Table Maintenance Protocol (RTMP), and the IP RIP.The 1982 Berkeley Software Distribution of the UNIX operating system implemented RIP in the routed daemon. The 4.2BSD release proved popular and became the basis for subsequent UNIX versions, which implemented RIP in the routed or gated daemon. The largest number of hops allowed for RIP is 15, which limits the size of networks that RIP can support.

Distance-vector routing protocols ... regular intervals (every 30 seconds in the case of RIP) to create a network map that is stored in each node's local topology database. Figure 1 shows how distance-vector routing works.... Distance-vector routing protocols transmit routing information that includes a distance vector, typically expressed as the number of hops to the destination. This information is flooded out all protocol-enabled interfaces at regular intervals (every 30 seconds in the case of RIP) to create a network map that is stored in each node's local topology database. Figure 1 shows how distance-vector routing works.RIP is an interior gateway protocol (IGP) that uses a distance-vector algorithm to determine the best route to a destination, using the hop count as the metric. In a RIP network, each router's forwarding table is distributed among the nodes through the flooding of routing table information. Because topology changes are flooded throughout the network, every node maintains the same list of destinations. In Figure 1, Routers A and B have RIP enabled on adjacent interfaces. Router A has known RIP neighbors Routers C, D, and E, which are 1, 2, and 3 hops away, respectively. Router B has known RIP neighbors Routers X, Y, and Z, which are 1, 2, and 3 hops away, respectively.

How RIP Routing Protocol Works

This tutorial explains how the RIP routing protocol learns and advertises network paths. Learn what the RIP routing protocol is and how it works in detail through examples. In the following section, we will understand how the RIP routing protocol works. If RIP detects any change in locally available networks’ information, it updates the other router about this change in the next update. This way, an administrator only needs to provide information about locally available networks once. For example, if the broadcast message contains information about a new path, the RIP protocol adds that path in the routing table or if the broadcast message contains information that an existing path has gone down, the RIP protocol removes that path from the routing table or marks that path unusable in the routing table. When a router running RIP protocol broadcasts the routing table, it not only broadcasts the information about the locally connected networks but also broadcasts the information about the networks that it has learned from its neighbors through the previously received broadcasts.
